Now turn to the space where you would like to incorporate a plant. You have several options that reach beyond the typical potted plant (though, with a unique container and a little imagination, you can really jazz up the every day potted house plant!)

If you have a large space to fill, then a small tree can do the trick. A coconut or palm tree can fill an empty corner or provide a sense of intimacy to a small nook. A tree can also add a sense of “getting away” to a cold room. You will have to remember, however, that trees can require more maintenance then your usual house plant. You will need to place it in an area that gets ample light and to stay on top of watering and fertilizing. Be careful of your floor below the plant and regularly check that water is not seeping out and causing water damage.

Ferns and ivies make for beautiful hanging plants and can look fabulous perched on a bookshelf or mantle. This adds an exotic look to your room. Plant stands are another way to add height and greenery.

Try replacing your normal flowering centerpiece with a living one. Use potted plants to enhance your dining table. A house plant will prevent you from running to the store at the last minute to pick up a centerpiece for a dinner party. Just make sure the pot is just as attractive as the plant.

With a little research and effort, anyone is capable of taking care of house plants that will thrive and add a sense of life to their home.
